Connecting design and fabrication
PipeCloud has released a new integration with SSI’s ShipConstructor, developed through PipeCloud’s membership in the SSI Developer Network (SDN). The integration connects ShipConstructor’s engineering data directly with pipe prefabrication planning and production — addressing one of the more manual and fragmented parts of the shipbuilding process.
PipeCloud is built to work across all major piping CAD systems, and ShipConstructor is a natural and important addition to this growing ecosystem. For shipyards using SSI’s digital shipbuilding platform, the integration means engineering data can now flow seamlessly into pipe shop execution without manual re-entry, disconnected spreadsheets, or paper-based handoffs.
How it works
In practice, the workflow is straightforward: engineering outputs are exported from ShipConstructor, imported into PipeCloud, and pipe spools are automatically prepared for fabrication — complete with materials, pricing, schedules, CNC instructions, weld maps, cutting and nesting lists, and full QA traceability. Work packages are then released directly to the shop floor.
The impact is tangible. Users have seen up to 5x faster planning for pipe spools, welders and cutters receiving work orders directly at their workstations, and a significant reduction in paper-based coordination on the shop floor.
ShipConstructor is widely used across naval and commercial shipyards, and its addition to PipeCloud’s supported platforms means a larger share of the industry can now benefit from this kind of connected, automated workflow. With the SDN framework in place, PipeCloud and SSI are well positioned to develop the integration further — making it an increasingly capable option for shipyards looking to close the gap between design and fabrication.
